The chair

I am in a comfortable chair in Uptown, Chicago because I have scars. They're ugly scars; the type that make me reach for rhetorical mirrors when people ask questions about my transition. When they pry I'm always there to deflect the topic onto one of my brighter moments: the first time I passed, the time I helped make a story about discrimination break into the national news, the first time I felt at home in my skin.
Still, here I am, trying to turn the mirror on myself. The true stories I usually tell try to inspire. They show people at their greatest, overcoming great odds to become a better person. These are the stories that inspire us to be better people. The stories that show us that everyone is capable of greatness.
